Give a big Cool Beans iNews Salute to
Jalen's just a kid himself, but he's already shown the world that he's using his KidPower to think children, think frugal, think inclusion, think humanitarian and pay it forward!
Dear KitchenKids!:
Jalen Newton
is a really special kid with a heart of gold. Jalen has asked me each summer can we build a lemonade stand. Every year I'd come up with an excuse to get out of it. I couldn't image how many lemons I would have to squeeze. This year I was reading a newsletter from Youth Service America http://www.ysa.org/. I saw an article about Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation http://www.alexslemonade.org/.
They were helping fight childhood cancer by kids having their own lemonade stands all over the country for the weekend of June 8-10, 2012. I showed Jalen the website and he was so excited! I signed Jalen up.
The organization set up a fund raising website for Jalen and his fund raising began.
The really cool thing was the organization sent Jalen a box full of supplies to help him with his fund raising effort, from thank you stickers & banner, to small gifts for their donations. Jalen was now over the top excited. He started to tell everyone about his lemonade stand in order to help Alex's foundation.
Jalen went to school and asked his teacher could he read the book about Alex and to ask his class for their support for his fund raiser. She agreed and he raised his first $19. We sent out emails to family and friends to help supportJalen. I posted it on facebook and twitter. Each time he received a donationJalen smiled.
Jalen and I made his fresh squeezed lemonade (thank God we had a juicer) and 48 lemons. We were ready for the fund raiser on Saturday, June 9th. My Jalen had his table and balloons and banners ready. He was so happy to be open for business. Jalen collected from on line donations, family & friends donations and lemonade stand donations a total of $270.
His dream of having a lemonade stand finally came true but he got so much more from the experience because he was excited to serve and make a difference to fight childhood cancer.
Jalen is a cool kid!
