for teaching us about corn... |
Native Americans living in the Southern portion of what is now the United States of America enjoyed ground corn (maize) for thousands of years before European explorers arrived in the “New World”. Researchers have found proof that as early as 3,600 B.C., Native Americans were eating popcorn, corn on the cob and a variety of other corn-based dishes that people around the world now eat every day.
When European settlers first came to America, Native Americans taught them how to grow corn and how to make several recipes that were popular among the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw and Creek Tribal Nations. Our taste buds owe a big thank you to the Native Americans who shared their scientific knowledge about growing corn and their creativity about how to cook with corn with everyone who immigrated to America! |
we also use corn every day - in many ways - outside of the kitchen...
